Finding Suri
Now that I had decided to get a puppy, I needed to find my puppy. I spent hours looking at various websites, reading online forums as well as contacting Kiri’s breeder, Julie Dimler, to see if she had any litters planned or recommendations. Julie did have a breeding planned, but it hadn’t happened yet, so a puppy from that would be over 4 months out, even if the breeding took.
Meanwhile I had stumbled across Robin Brown’s website, Broken Circle Border Collies. Robin is an active stockdog trainer and breeder, as well as a top stockdog trials competitor. As I looked through her current and planned breedings, I was very excited about the Jenny x Ben litter. (Learn more about Jenny and Ben in this post.)
I reached out to Robin and really enjoyed talking with her on the phone. In addition to getting a puppy from good working stockdog lines, I was *hoping* to get a tri-color, prick-eared female. While appearance is not the most important factor in choosing a dog, I spend a lot of time looking at, and photographing, my dog, so looks do matter to me. There were 3 tri-color females in the litter, but all were spoken for. But there was a really cute black and white girl and I decided that with the potential I thought this breeding could produce, I didn’t want to bypass this litter; I felt extremely lucky that Robin even had a pup available for me!
And so I had found my puppy! Getting ready for her arrival and finding her name were the next steps. I thought about names a lot over the next couple of weeks, even running my top choices past my son and his girlfriend. In the end, Suri was both my and Kylan’s top pick.
Suri is named for a young mystic character in the book, Age of Myth, by Michael J. Sullivan. Suri, like me, loves to run through the forest, accompanied by her wolf, Minna, who is described as being her sister, best friend and “wisest of wolves.”
